I didn’t get a chance to visit the GSA 2017 MFA degree show, but I did get the chance to go and see the undergraduate BA show. It was a good show with lots of interesting work. I felt that I could divide the work into 3 distinct categories:-
– art that is truly self indulgent to the point where it left me outside of it and knocking on the front door to come in because I didn’t feel invited
– art that is made to look dry much like well known art, mimicking the style of say for example Rauschenberg, David Salle, Warhol, Herman de Vries. This may give it an instant appeal through a familiar language and prove to be popular with buyers and collectors.
– art that is original and interesting and it stands out from the rest of the show not because it is loud, zany, shocking or attention speaking, but because it is adeventorous and has a unique quality to it.
