Artists Talk – Claire Barclay at Tramway Glasgow, 18/02/2017

Notes taken from a conversation  between Claire Barclay and [have to find this out]. Claire has a major show at the Tramway titled ‘Yield Point’.  She is a member of Glasgow Sculpture Studuos and also a studio holder. It was very useful to learn about the whole process of putting on this show and all of the different 3rd parties involved. Serious food for though regarding fabrication and installation. Here are my bullet points:-

  • The work responds to architecture, precious works also and our relationship with materials and the body in an in direct way.
  • Thinks about the space to make an installation
  • Also invites the viewer to explore the space, encourage movement around the space
  • Strong element of playfulness in the work
  • CAD style modelling of work to visualise for show
  • ‘For me it is more the accidental things that happen’ – can never predict outcome based on work in sketch books in studio
  • Wanted to control colours in exhibition
  • artists relationship with craft – most highly crafted work is made by engineers on machines. Not artisan, not interested in conjuring up beautiful objects but ideas. Empathise on relationship between making and thinking.
  • Context such as this show, leads to new processes – such as concrete and need to create a new technique
  • Can grapple with what degree of abstraction to apply to things and always thinking about how literal the work is and this show is a mixture of things
  • Taught at art school the body was the central focus of the work
  • Influenced by curious objects and the built environment

Questions:

Children touching work at opening – People sometimes think the work is meant to be very interactive

Touching – lady made point about if 20 years ago people would not want to touch because now are are used to touching phones and tablets. Don’t agree with this as it says that before touch screen we never touched anything!

Title of show – ‘yield point’, relationship point between materials
