Research visit: 3 Shows at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Sep 2016

I recently visited Yorkshire sculpture on 2nd Sept 2016 and was impressed by the show of work by Swiss artist Not Vital. Amazing structures that made me think of scale, materials, form and methods of production. In the lower field, there was an installation of 5 massive wooden sculptures by KAWS. I was fortunate enough to be the last person milling around looking at these sculptures, so I was left alone with them. The scale is phenomenal and the fabrication process equally mind boggling. Another fantastic group of shows put on at YSP. The final show was ‘Transparency’ at the Chapel gallery, featuring works drawn from the Arts Council Collection. 14 sculptures, installations and films made between 1978 and 2014. The show considers how artists have investigated subjects such as truth to material, the everyday or ordinary and physical and psychological transparency.  There was a work by Christine Borland in the show, who was one of my undergraduate tutors at GSA. The work I liked the most and found fascinating was by Yelena Popova and is a film that tells the story of the invisible town that where she was born and raised in Russia during the Cold War (seen below).
